The report assesses the “economic impact of Travel & Tourism for 181 countries. It measures spending on Travel & Tourism by households, businesses, governments and foreign visitors, in order to capture fully the economic contribution of both domestic and international tourism, thereby quantifying Travel & Tourism’s contribution to gross domestic product (GDP) and employment.”
The following are the highlights of the report for Cape Verde presented in a 10 year forecast:

expected to rise from 27.6% (CVE39.3 bn or US$497.0 mn) in 2009 to 37.0%
(CVE107.2 bn or US$1,243.1 mn) by 2019.
Employment

2019: 33.6%
The contribution of the Travel & Tourism Economy to employment is expected to
rise from 24,000 jobs in 2009, 25.1% of total employment, or 1 in every 4.0 jobs to
40,000 jobs, 33.6% of total employment or 1 in every 3.0 jobs by 2019.
Growth

Real GDP growth for the Travel & Tourism Economy is expected to be -5.6% in
2009 and to average 7.7% per annum over the coming 10 years.
Exports
2009: 69.1%
2019: 70.8%
Export earnings from international visitors and tourism goods are expected to
generate 69.1% of total exports (CVE37.4 bn or US$472.7 mn) in 2009, growing
(nominal terms) to CVE105.9 bn or US$1,228.0 mn (70.8% of total) in 2019.
Capital Investment
Travel & Tourism Capital Investment is estimated at
CVE3.9 bn, US$49.6 mn or 6.2% of total investment in year 2009. By
2019, this should reach CVE8.8 bn, US$102.5 mn or 6.2% of total.

The French Development Agency has created a credit line of over 1 billion Cape Verdean Escudos (approximately 9 million euros) in order to allow local municipalities to finance local projects, namely improving infrastructure.
The announcement marks the second phase of a program, which originally allowed the local governments to promote tourism and improve water supply projects and will be managed by commercial banks. The director of the Department of Local Administration, Salomão Furtado, indicated that the program should be ready by the end of March or the beginning of April.
The French Development Agency is a major partner of Cape Verde, and is currently financing a water supply project in Santiago.

The three political parties present at the National Assembly in Praia, Partido Africano da Independência de Cabo Verde (PAICV), Movimento para a Democracia (MpD) and União Cabo-Verdiana Independente e Democrática (UCID) unanimously approved the new law, which aims to prevent laundering money in Cape Verde.
This new law follows swiftly the financial scandal involving Portuguese bank, BPN and Cape Verdean financial institution Banco Insular, by far better monitoring of offshore banks or IFIs (International Financial Institutions).
Cape Verde has 11 banks that are authorised to carry out IFI transactions.

Cape Verde’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Brito, is to fly to Guinea-Bissau today along with the Portuguese secretary of state & foreign affairs, João Gomes Cravinho, following the assassinations of the President of the country and head of the armed forces. Brito will meet with other members of the CPLP (Community of countries of the Portuguese language) and the CEDEAO (Economic Community of African States), to discuss and analyze the future of the country.
President Joao Bernardo Vieira, who had ruled the country intermittently since 1980, was shot trying to flee his house on monday by renegade soldiers, after it became known that he had given the order for General Tagme to be killed.
In a meeting between the Brazilian and Cape Verdean governments in Praia, Santiago, an agreement was reached that $4 million dollars owed by Cape Verde would be converted into project funding for the education sector.
The debt, which had been building since the early 1980s and was in part from a loan to improve the telecommunications network, had been in negotiation in 1989, 1999 and 2006 and the two parties will meet again in March to sign an agreement.

Cape Verde government revokes the bank’s operating license as Banco Insular is stripped of its status as an international financial institution
According to Cape Verde’s National Press website, Banco Insular, which has been connected with one of the largest financial scandals in Portuguese history, failed to meet “prudential norms, namely regarding the replacement of own funds, respect for the solvability ratio limit and respect for the credit risk concentration limit.”
In addition, the bank “has not respected the deadlines established by supervising authorities regarding the submission of annual reports and the presentation of audited accounts, with no plausible justification.”
Banco Insular was created in 1997 and began its activities in Cape Verde in the second half of 1998. In 2002, it was acquired by Insular Holding Limited in London.

The vice-president of the Canary Islands, José Manuel Soria, who is currently on a visit to Cape Verde, confirmed the interest of the Canaries to “widen the cooperation with Cape Verde”.
In a statement made to the press after the meeting with the Cape Verdean secretary of State of the Economy, José Manuel Soria pointed that the cooperation between the two countries has been “very fortuitous”, and announced new initiatives of contribution in the economic, enterprise and cultural sectors. “Our objective is to express to the Cape Verdean government, the support of the Canarian government by deepening the bilateral relations in the economic and enterprise sectors”.
Newly elected president of the United States of America, Barack Obama, intends to establish a good relationship with the archipelago of Cape Verde to help to build and promote a more secure world. In a short message, the President stated “I hope to work with you to construct a more secure world during the next four years and to promote a good relationship between our two countries”.
Barack Obama went on to thank Cape Verdean president, Pedro Pires, for his message of congratulations upon his election.
