The currency of Cape Verde is the Cape Verde Escudo which is pegged directly to the euro at a rate of 1 euro: 110.265 escudos. The euro is almost universally accepted in most bars and restaurants, but be aware then many will treat 1 euro as 100 escudos; good for the owner of the establishment, but not so good for you when you come to pay for your lobster dinner. It is possible to change most major currencies into escudos either at your hotel or at the airport, and most towns have ATMs so you can withdraw funds using your Visa card.
Be aware that MASTERCARD & AMERICAN EXPRESS, along with many other cards, are NOT currently accepted at many locations.
Also the currency is ONLY legal tender inside the Republic of Cape Verde and you won’t be able to change it out outside of the country.
The ISO 4217 code for the escudo is CVE, there are 100 and amounts are normally written by using $ as the decimal separator, such as 50$00 for 50 escudos, or 1.000$00 for 1000.
