Cape Verde to gain from MTCF wildlife grant

The new initiative is designed to support several non-governmental organisations in Cape Verde with protecting and monitoring nesting loggerheads. It is thought up to 25% of nesting female loggerheads are killed annually in the archipelago by illegal poaching.

While it's true that some money from the Marine Turtle Conservation Fund has been allocated to Cabo Verde, I'm afraid it is nowhere near the quoted $1.5m. A coalition of conservation organisations applied for a grant and were awarded $45,000. $10,000 was spent on a much-needed workshop which brought together a large number of people from central and local govt and from NGOs to begin to formulate a more cohesive strategy for turtle conservation. $3,000 was allocated for training teams from the Camara Municipal in Maio and Sao Nicolau and $2,000 for equipment for those islands. The remaining $30,000 was allocated to Boa Vista to patrol more beaches and try and stem the catastrophic mortality of nesting loggerheads through hunting.

Please don't get the impression that Turtle SOS or any other NGO or government body is well funded - we still need as much support as we can get.
