The European Caribbean without the hurricanes!
Cape Verde’s location in the Atlantic, dominated by the north-eastern winds which sweep across the Sahara desert lend to a much milder climate than other countries that lie on the same latitude.
The rainy season runs from August to October, although on islands such as Sal precipitation can be extremely sparse; it is thought in the 1900s Sal actually went years without a drop of rain! A statistic that meant, before the advent of desalination plants, the droughts made life very difficult to sustain.
The “windy season”, caused by the “harmattan”, or Sahara winds, runs from October to June and provides perfect conditions for water sports such as windsurfing and kite surfing. These winds are usually strongest between January to March.
The land temperature averages around 25°C throughout the year and due to the strong influence of the Atlantic ocean, rarely fluctuates more than 10°C in either direction. Sea temperatures range from approximately 21°C in February and March to 25°C in September and October.
